PRESIDENT PLAZA is an Asian office/shopping center @ Cambie Street, Richmond Shopping District, which has been opened for almost a decade. The area of the alteration was the existing north entry that had been accommodating a much higher traffic than expected. Striving to provide a very dynamic design to the rather banal north entry, the two flanking walls were clad with different alum laminates with different texture and reflectivity, forming bands running horizontally to create a sense of movement. The choice of metallic laminate also had to do with the existing metal cladding on the building exterior, its durability and flame rating. Mirrors were installed at the eye level section thru out for reflections and add visual connection across the entry. A multiple-sections canopy, each tilted at a slightly different angle and faced with a dark mirror finish laminate, was hung from the original ceiling. Oval opening were strategically cut out on the canopy to allow existing lights to filter thru. A smaller trapezoidal shaped “fly” canopy, clad in red gloss plastic laminate, was placed at a lower height, over the existing telephone area with punch opening directly above each telephone booth. Small halogen task lights were added in between.
