PRESIDENT PLAZA is an office/shopping center @ Cambie Street, Richmond Shopping District, which has been opened for almost a decade. This is the second alteration that we were involved and the area included the 649 sales desk, open stair, escalator area and elevator lobby in the south main entry. 649 Station: to deter vandalizing and poster sticking on the existing 649 station, a 3-section, white perforated metal screen with two 1” diameter flowing curvilinear bars was added on the existing station. A new stepped wall with horizontal bandings was added to separate the stair behind. A translucent glass screen was placed above the stepped wall to allow diffuse light to the stair. Stair: all the existing smooth stair treads were replaced with a more durable sandstone look porcelain tiles with a dark slate looking nosing strips for more slip resistant. Handrails, balustrade and guardrails are all painted white/black. New perforated metallic screen were added on the outside for additional visual screening. Escalator Area: the sides and underside of the escalator were sheathed with laminated panel of horizontal band. While the existing small seating/planter area underneath was to remain, it was fitted with a box that displayed a “larva” flowing image behind the 3 circle openings to add more visual interest to that area. Elevator lobby: a more neutral atmosphere that carries some of the early metallic and banding themes was proposed. New horizontal sections of metal and muted tone wood laminated wall panels were added on the cab door wall, with a mirror section at eye level. New MURANO glass wall sconces were placed in between to add some accent lighting.
